On June 13, 2016, Hype Machine on Sonos will only be available to SoundCloud Go premium subscribers in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.
To keep using Hype Machine on your Sonos device, there are three steps:
- Sign up for SoundCloud Go.
- Connect your Hype Machine account to your SoundCloud account. After you link the accounts, your Go status will be visible on this page.
- Make sure to use this Hype Machine account in your Sonos controller.
Much of the music shared by bloggers that you’ve been able to discover on Hype Machine is hosted on SoundCloud. We’ve been SoundCloud supporters from the very beginning (2008? it has been quite a while), and as their service changes, we are excited to continue to play a role in its growth. Each new Go subscriber enables SoundCloud to better support artists who share music on their service.
Get in touch if you have questions.
UPDATE 6/13/2016: As mentioned above, these availability changes are now live.
UPDATE 9/14/2016: SoundCloud Go is now available in Australia and New Zealand, so you can link accounts and use Hype Machine on Sonos there.
UPDATE 10/19/2016: SoundCloud Go is now available in Canada.
8tracks and hypem were the real gut’s behind sonos.
RIP_
May 31, 2016 10:44 am
This is unfortunate. I’ve been working with Sonos customer service for over 2 months trying to get their soundcloud integration to play more than one song at a time (playlists don’t work), and they haven’t been able to figure this out.
May 31, 2016 11:40 am
What?! OMG you’ve just crippled my Sonos.
May 31, 2016 11:46 am
Just got the e-mail about this, brutal news 🙁 Hype Machine was my most used music service. It’s great that Sonos supports so many others, but really, the libraries of Google Play Music/Tidal/Apple/Spotify/others are going to basically be the same. Hype Machine is unmatched!!!
What’s a poor Canadian to do?? It sounds like based on your options above, there is a workaround for certain countries, but what about the rest of us!
May 31, 2016 12:05 pm
This is crap. 🙁
HM was the best thing about SONOS. What a douche move.
May 31, 2016 12:09 pm
This is by far the worst news. We ONLY use hype, first you took away 8tracks now hype. Gutted about this. What a waste of $1000s of dollars setting the system up.
May 31, 2016 12:11 pm
Why oh why? Torn on if this is good or bad news. Makes me rethink investing in anymore sonos products and instead going the old school route. Same cost, but being able to play what I want, when I want, and how I want means a lot. Wondering if any companies out there still think of the customer experience, or if we’re all just subjected to law firm’s input?
May 31, 2016 12:16 pm
So I can use the $4 iOS app on my phone to play HM on a BlueTooth speaker in my house. But I cannot play HS on a Sonos without paying $120 per year?
May 31, 2016 12:32 pm
You guys have just killed Hype Machine on Sonos. No way am I spending another $120/yr for some subpar service. They offer a free version, why can’t you guys make that work?
May 31, 2016 12:36 pm
Surely this is a move backwards. Please nooo
May 31, 2016 2:05 pm
I don’t blame Sonos one bit for this. In fact I feel sorry for Sonos that Hype Machine discriminates against Sonos’s listeners. Pure greed on Hype Machine’s part. I’ll just plug in an ios device to the back of my play 5 or buy an audio chromecast to get the same service. I honestly can’t imagine anyone actually signing up for sound cloud go premium to maintain use of this service on Sonos.
May 31, 2016 2:19 pm
This is such a dick move. Why only do this for Sonos?! Screw HypeMachine.
May 31, 2016 2:36 pm
C’mon guys! You need to figure out how to make this work! This is unacceptable. What is to stop all of the services from doing this and then Sonos is just completely worthless.
May 31, 2016 3:46 pm
Really disappointed. Increasing the level of effort of your end users makes me strongly reconsider pouring hundreds more into more sonos products. No matter what’s come along Sonos has continued to be the top tier in smart speakers that sound great- if I get pushed to using my chromecast to experience Hypem.com like I need to for the full Google play experience, it doesn’t make sense to invest more in Sonos.
Interesting this is on the heels of making your Android app free – seems as though this has been a change in the works for some time but you left us in the dark.
May 31, 2016 4:16 pm
This is the WORST news ever. I ONLY use Hype Machine on my SONOS. And because I’m Canadian, I can’t even sign up for Soundcloud to get it to work if I wanted.
Couldn’t you just throw an ad in the stream once in a while? This is horrible news and has essentially bricked my Sonos. You guys suck
May 31, 2016 4:54 pm
Greedy bastards
May 31, 2016 5:10 pm
Ehh – kinda irritating, but I guess I’m paying for Soundcloud Go.
May 31, 2016 6:12 pm
Such a shortsighted move. Not only are you asking us to pay for access to HypeM but Soundcloud Go is NOT AVAILABLE in Australia (and so many other countries).
Perhaps Hype Machine is being used as a tool to increase subscriptions to Soundcloud Go? Definitely premature at least.
Anyway it’s a sad loss for my Sonos setup but it’s goodbye from this Australian user. Availability aside, if I’m paying, Spotify and Apple Music are better options on Sonos anyway.
May 31, 2016 6:53 pm
Really disappointed with this announcement, mainly for the lack of transparency. Is SoundCloud the one which is enforcing this change and Sonos and Hype just the deliverers of the bad news?
Hype was one of the main reasons why I bought a Sonos. Many of my Hype songs are hosted on blogs, rather than coming from SoundCloud, why do I need a subscription to listen to them? Is SoundCloud giving Hype commission for every Go customer they get?
May 31, 2016 11:48 pm
Excuse my ignorance but where in Hype Machine do you ‘2.Connect your Hype Machine account to your SoundCloud account.’?
June 1, 2016 5:44 am
FAIL. Maybe you have a choice in this and maybe you don’t. To the extent that you do, take a look at all the commenters here and realize that you’re losing almost all of us by making this move.
June 1, 2016 9:34 am
This is terrible news. The system is incredibly expensive, doesn’t support bluetooth, and now you have added a subscription cost just to play music that is otherwise free on all other platforms. This may be the last straw for a platform that is rapidly becoming outdated and uncompetitive.
June 1, 2016 12:32 pm
Really sorry to see this happen, is it being pushed by SoundCloud or is this a voluntary move by Hypem? I think it will be damaging in the long term.
Methods to work around it will abound, from VPN users if free access is in place from other countries, through to just using a Line-In to a Play 5 from a spare bit of kit. Some people will surely subscribe, others will work around, and others will drift away to other stations.
June 1, 2016 1:53 pm
RIP HypeMachine, RIP chances of me purchasing any more Sonos products. Awful move
June 1, 2016 3:42 pm
Guys, to clear up some of the comments, this was not a decision made by Sonos. I’ve e-mailed them about this, and they indicated that it was Hype Machine that has decided to change their support of Sonos, requiring us to get a Soundcloud account in order to use Sonos products.
In other words, it’s a move by Hype Machine entirely – not Sonos. Sucks that Sonos is crippled by this however, but what can they do if Hype decides to change the rules?
Hopefully HM can give us some insight here. I doubt Sonos users are huge users of their website, and I can’t believe the inconvenience of taking this service away from us (nobody is going to sign up for Soundcloud Pro for this) will be worth it.
Furthermore, there is ZERO support for people outside of the four countries where the pro membership is even available. What are people in Canada supposed to do? We don’t even have the option for a Pro account. We’re just left without any proper use of Hype on Sonos. Lame.
June 1, 2016 3:48 pm
I emailed them too. Got a response back from Zoya Feldman saying, “SoundCloud’s recent changes no longer allow us to continue our service on Sonos without a Go subscription. By providing an integration with SoundCloud, we’re hoping to continue access to all the music Hype Machine indexes for Sonos listeners.”
Sounds like they’re saying Soundcloud is the one that’s forced the issue here, not Sonos and not Hype Machine. Funny, because I can listen to Soundcloud all day directly on my Sonos without a subscription. I wonder if that’s what’s coming next?
June 2, 2016 11:43 am
It’s time for soundcloud to die IMO… it’s just another spotify apple music tidal etc now. the new independent artists have new services like hearthis.at and yungcloud
June 2, 2016 2:33 pm
I agree with all the other comments – I use Hypemachine on my Sonos systems regularly. I will not be paying for any new music services, so I’ll just work around this, or more likely just stop using Hypemachine because it is too inconvenient.
June 3, 2016 2:13 pm
Will just stop using hm on sonos 😕.
June 4, 2016 4:21 pm
There are actually four, not three, steps to keep using Hypemachine on Sonos. You forgot: move too the US, the UK, France or Ireland. Thanks for the discrimination, guys, thanks so much! Thanks also for not giving a s…
June 5, 2016 3:19 pm
Stupid move. Very sad because I liked HM. Won’t be listening to it anymore though.
June 6, 2016 6:58 pm
Can I return my Sonos now?
June 7, 2016 11:28 am
Makes more sense to set up an aux in on your sonos and stream from phone
June 7, 2016 1:33 pm
No matter how cool/hip/trendy a music hub can be, if they are going to start charging you in order to listen to it via your favorite hardware, i.e. Sonos, there are other music portals to explore, e.g.
https://22tracks.com/
And not working with Sonos yet, but full of possibilities:
http://www.rbmaradio.com/channels
and
http://dashradio.com/
and I’m sure, various others.
I love #Hypem, and it sure sounds better via Sonos, however, SoundCloud must have made a hard-to-turn-down assumingly mutually-beneficial propo$al for them to make this decision …which ultimately creates a gap …one that can be remedied via other music services.
If Sonos just worked a system like Airplay or a partnership with Apple, a lot of these things would be solved. Not to promote T-Mobile but #MusicFreedom !
June 8, 2016 5:07 pm
It is too bad the music lovers at Hype Machine couldn’t negotiate this better. We have gone backwards and you have let us down.
June 12, 2016 3:56 pm
Booooo. Welp, there goes being able to play any of MY music in the household. Not spending more money. HUGELY disappointing… let down indeed. =/
June 13, 2016 7:16 pm
So long my favourite music service. Let me know when it’s back up
June 14, 2016 6:20 am
Really lame guys. I suppose hype is getting crunched by all the legal bullshi* out there but then at least tell us that. If not then you guys are just making poor short term decisions. We’ve all paid for hype app etc and would likely pay a small sub fee of a few bucks a month yes but the SoundCloud implementation sucks. Guess that’s where you Guys had been hosting tracks from under license? Make some moves quick so you gain your independence back.
June 14, 2016 9:37 am
WTH HYPEM IS LAME
June 14, 2016 10:40 am
SHITTY SHIT IS SHITTY
June 14, 2016 11:57 am
I just deleted my hypem app. I don’t want to use a music service that is purely dollar-driven, and doesn’t think about its users over the long term. Bye.
June 14, 2016 5:06 pm
Awww so sad, I really liked listening to Popular tracks on Hype Machine through Sonos. It was super easy to find cool new music that way. I would pay a one-off fee to keep this going but not a monthly subscription.
June 14, 2016 5:38 pm
Seriously disappointing. You and SoundCloud killing new music.
June 15, 2016 9:20 pm
Yesterday was a sad, sad day.
June 16, 2016 3:18 pm
This is very disappointing. I hope you decide to change it back :'(
June 16, 2016 7:25 pm
Well this really fucking sucks….
June 16, 2016 9:21 pm
Had Kanye in the courtyard of my chateau n went to play a track & the hype m didn’t work … Two thumbs down
June 16, 2016 9:24 pm
Grrr… What’s the point in having a Sonos? If we keep having to sign up for 25 different music services. And on the other hand what would be the point in listening to hype machine anymore if I have 25 other services to choose from? Head scratcher really …
So brutal.
June 17, 2016 11:09 am
Was just about to buy another Play 5 for Father’s Day. Now I get this news. Definitely not buying it anymore, done buying sonos. Hype Machine integration was one of the best things going for it. What a crippling move.
June 17, 2016 12:28 pm
What a pile of horseshit. time to exit sonos. You had your day.
June 17, 2016 11:58 pm
As has been stated above (both eloquently & much more bluntly), this seems like a bad long term business decision for all parties involved.
With a plethora of streaming & speaker options available, these short term profits will be traded for long term market share and growth.
June 20, 2016 6:34 am
My Sonos is now useless to me…
June 20, 2016 9:28 pm
Sonos is what introduced me to Hype Machine and was a huge plus for the system. But now, you’ve migrated to a service that isn’t much use for a user in New Zealand and yet another service to subscribe too. It was nice while it lasted Hype Machine, all the best but I’m done here.
June 21, 2016 1:15 am
Well that was a waste of time. Just signed up to Hype Machine as it was advertised as free from the sonos app, only to be redirected here when trying to play it
June 21, 2016 2:46 pm
What? Sounclound go it not available in my country…this is very sad. I love hypemachine and now not able to use it.
bad decision!
June 22, 2016 7:59 am
sweet thanks for nothing
June 22, 2016 8:15 am
Ugh.
We have lost a great service and selling point for Sonos. HM, what the bloody hell are you thinking? HM an Sonos were a great fit. Such a shortsighted move.
June 22, 2016 8:39 pm
Fuck Hype Machine. I’m done with it now.
June 25, 2016 3:55 pm
Hypem, why would you ever change? Your loyal listeners aren’t happy. You’ll keep losing listeners with stunts like this.
June 25, 2016 6:13 pm
Hahaha , you are shockingly poor.
Just plugged in a new Sonos, clicked to register for hype machine, done all that then…
Paywall via soundcloud
What a waste of time , thanks , crappest customer experience
June 28, 2016 12:33 pm
WORST DECISION EVER
June 28, 2016 1:04 pm
how do i sync my hypm playlist to sound cloud so i can play it on sonos??this is so annoying!!
June 28, 2016 3:45 pm
this is a terrible greedy idea. please fix this.
June 30, 2016 11:21 am
You customers have made it very clear that the combinations of HM and sonos is far more valuable than HM and soundcloud. If this was a play to break sonos then it is a very ill advised move due to the fact that sonos has many other music companies to choose from. In fact this moves only benefits soundcloud, and in all honesty I’m going to stop using both HM and Soundcloud because of this self centered decision (which I am pretty sure was pushed by soundcloud). Not only will this hurt up coming artist trying to gain exposure, but it will also destroy Hypemachine.
July 4, 2016 1:28 am
Yeah this sucks. artists can use a paid subscription service, and there are plenty already available. But the charm of hypem has always been that you get to hear the remixes from the little guys, who aren’t as concerned about the royalty as they are about the exposur and reaching new fans. Profoundly disappointed in this decision. “Set music free by making it free” -gramatik
July 4, 2016 7:21 am
this is still the worst.
July 6, 2016 4:38 pm
$120 a year for SoundCloud Go? What a joke. I’ll just listen to Hype Machine for free on my PC or phone and Bluetooth speaker.
July 6, 2016 5:19 pm
Hypem WHHHHHHYYYYYYY!!!!! Selling out; I get it but really $9.99 a month. I’ve been a loyal member since 2006. Why!!!
July 9, 2016 2:02 pm
So basically a cash grab from people you assumed would pay….. HM just lost a customer. I hope enjoyed the $4.00 you got from my years ago.
July 9, 2016 2:30 pm
Mmm yet another service forced to go down the subscription route only on sonos. Seems that the think all sonos owners have bottomless pockets full of money.
Loved hm however I won’t be subscribing or wasting my time trying a workaround to get it running on sonos.
Time for sonos to provide other free sources there are plenty out there. As one goes down the subscription route then they need to have others in the wings.
One of the best things about sonos is that your market is dedicated music listeners. Who live the ease and diversity of accessing music. You need to keep us interested in your product more free services are essential.
July 10, 2016 12:35 am
This makes me sadder by the day. Please can some one make a work around for this. There has to be a way
July 11, 2016 8:42 am
The value of Sonos to all users of HypeMachine just got reduced. It’s awesome that now using much cheaper Bluetooth enabled devices provides better music experiences. Thanks Sonos. Hand down worst consumer related decision a company I support has made since Napster.
July 14, 2016 7:06 pm
Please change it back! Huge mistake made here. Will not be upgrading or changing over.
July 15, 2016 3:05 pm
This is awful, really bad move, why should I have to pay money for a free web service? I could literally buy a small computer to replace my sonos and send it commands to play hypem. Really a jerk move.
July 21, 2016 1:45 pm
This is the saddest news ever. Why are you doing this to us? Why would you require us to pay money for a free web service just so we can play it over our speakers?
Not paying for this. Ridiculous.
July 22, 2016 12:24 pm
Hypem was the only thing keeping me from selling my Sonos speakers and getting bluetooth extensions. Looks like Sonos is getting the boot now!
July 24, 2016 4:02 pm
As I’ve said before, this is a sad, short-sighted decision by HypeMachine.
Something to point out though (judging by some of the reactions here) is that this has NOTHING to do with Sonos. Sonos has no control over the streaming licensing arrangements that HypeM has with Soundcloud and whatever conditions Soundcloud forces on HypeM. It’s unfortunate for Sonos (and many other internet enabled streaming devices BTW) that new licensing royalty fee arrangements makes passive streaming (where you just put music on in the background) so costly.
It’s just a pity that HypeMachine can be so easily bullied about by Soundcloud and try and spin it as anything but terrible.
July 24, 2016 8:30 pm
Big fail. Please resolve this!
July 25, 2016 10:13 am
Terrible decision. Nobody’s going to pay $10/month for this, it’s just going to drive people away faster.
July 25, 2016 2:54 pm
sonos needs to start to provide more free sources there are plenty out there.
July 29, 2016 2:08 pm
Kind of disappointed, but it was a free service.. It was good when it lasted I guess..
Also, maybe Hype machine had no choice to do otherwise..
August 8, 2016 10:34 pm
Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Sort this out please.
August 9, 2016 12:52 pm
Glad I wasn’t a previous HM fan! After having Sonos for maybe half a year I tried to sign up for HM and was led to the pages asking me to pay. I use Sonos speakers mainly with TuneIn Radio and my own music ripped from CD.
August 14, 2016 5:43 pm
I just use play through the browser now into a media center (an old mac mini) that has a bluetooth usb device and syncs all rount the house. It’s not Sonos but works well.
August 23, 2016 4:52 pm
This is horrible. The one good thing sonos had to offer and you take it away. I will be sure to tell all my friends the shitty experience I’ve had with Sonos and how Sonos is a waste of money!
September 4, 2016 4:25 pm
I love hypem, it is my #1 favourite way to listen and discover new music, I felt this way about it when I first started using the site in 2010. However, this change was a bit disheartening.
I would love to contribute to hypem to see improvements in the service / support it, and I feel a bit sour to instead give money to soundcloud only so that I might use hypem on my sonos. I was wondering if there will be other benefits for hypem users who buy a soundcloud account and hook it up to hypem?
Anyways, I’ll love you guys forever! Would def not have as much music cred as I’ve got without you 😛
September 11, 2016 10:32 pm
I just want to make fun of all of you complaining for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on sound equipment and now getting upset that you can’t listen to music for free.
HypeM is a blog aggregator that carefully curates music for you- HypeM has to make a decision to monetize some aspect of it’s relationship with the aritsts through Sound Cloud so that these artists actually make an income. Musicians have never made so little money from their work.
Nothing like seeing people who own high end luxury goods complaining about having to pay for music. If you only use HypeM in this day and age to listen to music you’re even more of an idiot, and I doubt you spend much money on music at all.
September 20, 2016 10:40 pm
It’s very simple, sonos gets a kickback from all the music apps, hence why most of the apps are premium based except for the 800lbs gorillas like Pandora. Even Amazon prime music app doesn’t work unless you have purchased and downloaded your tunes.
Cheers
September 27, 2016 11:56 am
What the hell? This sucks. This is not working and I just lost my favorite music source. I am willing to make it work, value the service and curation but IT”S NOT WORKING!!!
Are there other Hype -like sources that haven’t fallen that you might recommend?
October 4, 2016 9:20 am
Hype machine you have just made 2016 the worst year of all time. Utter disgust at this move. You should be ashamed.
December 3, 2016 7:19 am
Such a shame.
February 14, 2017 4:43 pm
….And this is why Hype Machine will be forgotten. They used to be about discovering new music/artists/remixes, but now just wanna make money. And don’t even try to say they did this ONLY for the artists on SoundCloud. Hype Machine is for discovering artists. Once I hear an amazing song, I instantly add it on Apple Music and Spotify. They get their money and build a fan base. Hype Machine was about putting them out there to be found. Now that they want to monetize their service, they just become a lame version of all the others. Sad for music lovers. Sad for new artists and remixers. The hype is gone. Time to look elsewhere.
April 18, 2017 6:09 pm
Fuck SoundCloud. I want the original Hype back
June 11, 2017 12:33 pm
