We want to make it easier for everyone to explore the wealth of blogs we track here on The Hype Machine. You can use last.fm’s music tags to browse by genres, but our set of meta-tags is here to distinguish blogs through some other meaningful criteria:
Ad-free: bloggers who choose not to run advertisements on their blog. There’s nothing wrong with ad revenue, but it’s also worthwhile to spotlight the writers who blog without financial incentive.
Nightlife: bloggers who organize and promote shows, including their own DJ nights.
Something different: music that’s not on the Popular page. If you want to discover music you probably haven’t heard before, try one of these blogs.
Female blogger: there just aren’t enough of them.
Original blogger: bloggers who’ve been with us since 2005. That’s a lifetime in internet years, respect your elders!
Commercial/PR: bloggers who represent or manage artists, as well as blogs run by clubs, event series, or shops. Music may be their pleasure, but it’s also their business.
Label: blogs run by record labels. They don’t only blog about artists on their label (we wouldn’t include them if they did), but they do provide some partial reviews of their own.
Local: bloggers who focus on their local music scene, including local shows and bands.
Magazine: sites in a different format, and blogs run by print publications.
Radio: blogs run by stations you can listen to on a transistor radio.
Awesome! Having problems loading the site though!

I all sounds amazing, but the site won’t load for me either!

It didn’t load for me on Firefox or Opera at first (but Google Chrome worked). I restarted my computer and then it worked.

Update is on the whole a huge step in the right direction. The site is faster and it does more..
I am curious how duplicate grouping affects mp3 plays – is the song always played from the server belonging to the person who blogged it first?

“Female blogger: bloggers who write from a different perspective.”
Really?
No, really?
December 17, 2010 @ 12:53 pm
@DJ Cal: all blogged songs are reuploaded to The Hype Machine’s own servers, so bloggers have nothing to worry about!

50% of the population is “different.” I see now.

Awesome. Very good changes !!!!
December 17, 2010 @ 11:58 pm
@Josh hmm.. how do you know? My understanding is that the songs are (were?) played directly from the blogs, except in the case where it is getting a lot of plays at which point the hypem load-balancing kicks in.

I like the new changes. Especially the new blog directory. Thanks for all the work.
One slight criticism. On the blog directory, each blog has a square and at the bottom of the square is a banner which shows typical artists.
When this banner is pale, the font is almost impossible to read.

Is there a way to find out, when viewing the page of a particular blog, what tags apply to them?
My site is listed under “original blogger” (thanks!), but I can’t seem to find it in the “ad-free” index (where it should also be). Any way for me to add that myself?
Great work, totally dig the tag action, and the other new features.

The new directory has some amazing features, and it feels much more personal and user-friendly. But I’m curious why the same blogs are coming up on the first page of multiple tags. For example, I saw the same blog come up on page one when I clicked five different tags. This doesn’t seem fair to blogs, like mine, that are always buried on pages 10 or 15. May I suggest rotating the blogs so different ones come up on page one each time you select a tag? It would feel fresher and give every blog a fair chance. Great job on the whole redesign!

Thanks

I’m loving Hypemachine and using it daily –
Would be very thrilled to have my website in your directory, is that possible to achieve in any way?
