The Knife’s Heartbeats was a big one for me. I’d heard Jose Gonzalez’s version which I really liked and it led me to discover his record which is one of my recent favorites. I don’t think I would have heard the original version if it wasn’t for its appearance on the Machine and that’s just a classic a pop song.
I was also pretty excited to see live recordings from White Columns in 1981. Classic NY no wave that I’d read about but never thought I’d hear. Thank you The Internet!

Oh yeah. And thank you Anthony!

I really got a kick when I heard Hot Chip for the first time. It was so fresh, and innovative. It was just at the time that The Knife’s Silent Shout album had leaked, so I had one electronic album that was dark and deep and distressed, and another one with a happy side to it.

I discovered Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on 52 of 2005. I’ll be checking out their LA show in March. I work on the digital side of the business, and I think this is easily the best site for discovering new music. Blasting “Is This Love?” and “Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth” has brought new life to cubicle row. I even formally presented the Hype Machine to my colleagues as the best way to tap into the viral promotional genius of people who actually LOVE music. Happiness.

I just love listening to the great mashups or covers, things I would never hear unless there was an agrigator like hype-machine. I feel sometimes Like I am listening to the state of popular culture. Like when Walk The Line came out a bunch of johhny cash came to the top. Things like that let me in some way know whats going on with the rest of the world.

oh and of course britney.

Actually I only buy indie CD if a lot of people review and post it it. I quit buying big label/big act altogether. So, now my CD buying is really tight. No more filler and junk.

oh no! oh my! was so great that i bought the pre-release for $1.50. and i would suggest that everyone do the same.

the hype machine… it’s the new radio…FM is dead. long live the MP3 blogs…
some of the artists i heard first on the Hype mahine would have to include Sufjan Stevens, Wolf Parade, Iron & Wine
February 28, 2006 2:44 pm
Been pimping the MP3 blogs on my site that introduce me to great stuff…so far the list is ridiculous: Imogene Heap, Controller.Controller, Tiny, Matchbook Romance, sourceVictoria, Richard Swift, Taxpayer, Autolux, Chixdiggit, Gnarls Barkley, Okkervil River, Hanne Hukkelberg, and scads more. Your site is evil. It was sent by Satan to make me go out and buy music by the truckoad. My wallet cries out for mercy, and yet you have none to offer. Masochist that I am, however, I cannot turn away. I weep in my soul as I turn up the volume.

As someone who consumes music at a huge rate I couldn’t live without this site anymore. Lately I’ve bought records by The Howling Hex, Jose Gonzalez, Tunng, The Mae Shi, Love is All, The Spinto Band, Wolf Parade, Morningwood, Death From Above 1979, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, Giant Drag because of Hype Machine. There are many more I can’t recall right now. And as a DJ I’m also spreading this music to others like a virus. It’s better than being on the mailing lists of a thousand music PR people. Cheers.

The Stars!! I love everything about them, and if I hadn’t found this site, I would have never found such an amazing band. I absolutely love “Your Ex-lover is dead” and I was such a fan of them, I bought their CD and I just recently went to their concert. It was all because of this amazing site. I even love the cover songs and the remixes, and everything else. Until I learn how to post my own mp3 blogs…I’m definitely coming back here!! Thanks so much.

Alex’s post above pretty much mentions everything I wanted to say: mash-ups, covers, cultural trends. Plus, as an impoverished grad student, I use it to grab tracks from bands I already like (Kid Koala, Bloc Party, Ted Leo, Mission of Burma, the Noisettes, Billy Childish); lots of gratitude to Jamie’s Runout Groove for posting early Pulp tracks over the past couple of weeks. One band I discovered here was the Indelicates, based on the fantastically titled “Waiting for Pete Doherty to Die.” (And I play “We Hate the Kids” during my office hours.) Also, the Pipettes and the Go! Team.
I get little stars in my eyes when I talk about this site. Seriously. Thank you so much!

Love your site! I have found loads of great music here! To mention a few bands:
Cadence Weapon, Padded Call, Peter and The Wolf, Tom Vek, Controller Controller, Kaki King, Poni Hoax, For Against and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Now the problem is to buy all good stuff as well! And I hope everyone have noticed the donation link up right, I have!
March 1, 2006 6:19 am
Couldn’t list all the great stuff I’ve got into through this site…there’s such a great variety…and this isn’t really a new band as such, but please…listen to the Cato Salsa Experience (they’re much better than their name..i promise!) and then maybe they’ll come back here for a tour…go on…i dare you!
March 1, 2006 1:46 pm
Hiya. I hadn’t heard that Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan were working together until I heard them on the Hype Machine. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It’s just perfect.

March 1, 2006 4:48 pm
I am so happy to hear that I was able to share my experience of discovering music with all of you!
I’ve also found several bands that I’ve never heard of before as well. The most recent thing I ran into was this track posted by Music for Robots, it’s lots of fun.
March 1, 2006 6:22 pm
Sooooooo many, I forget the ones from a while back. Recently though I heard People In Planes on Hype – they’re damn good. Tapes N’ Tapes was also a Hype discovery.
March 2, 2006 12:11 pm
I found out about Man Man from Hype Machine and now I am oh so Happy! Thanks!
March 2, 2006 2:31 pm
THE VOOM BLOOMS!!! Incredible Band!!
March 2, 2006 6:28 pm
I found Clap your Hands Say Yeah, Voxtrot, Louis XIV, The National, Stars, Wolf Parade, Tom Vek, The Knife, Tapes ‘n’ Tapes – too many to mention.
Thanks for finding the music of the last year š
March 2, 2006 7:37 pm
Stars! They ended up being my favorite band of the year and I’ve now bought all their albums. Architecture in Helsinki and Wolf Parade were pretty big discoveries too. I really don’t know what I would do without the Hype Machine, it’s become a huge part of my day.
Thank you!
March 3, 2006 2:09 am
Too many to mention them all but Wolfmother is probably my favourite new band and it’s also great to hear some long lost favourites too.
Great site!

52 Teenagers – Please don’t turn out the light—wonderful song.
I have become a huge fan of mash-ups, especially Aggro-1’s stuff. The Kelly Clarkson/American Analog Set song is a great example of a mashup done right.
And I was first introduced to Goldfrapp on this side of the pond from Fluxblog and Hype Machine. And really, many many others that are so different from the ole Top 40 stuff.
Thanks for a great and innovative site.
March 3, 2006 11:08 am
I had never heard Imogen Heap before I discovered it on your best 52 of 2005. What a great song, and the rest of the album is great as well. Thanks for having such an array of music to choose from.
March 3, 2006 12:32 pm
Has anyone heard the Pocket Dwellers before? I figure this is a good place to request others to post songs by bands I would like to hear as well. I’ve told everyone I know about this site, it makes every day a whole lot better.
March 3, 2006 12:42 pm
UME rocks!
March 3, 2006 12:43 pm
I’m a huge fan of Canadian Bands and just last week I heard Islands’ “Return To The Sea” for the first time on The Hype Machine, which I absolutely love. THM is amazing. Keep it up!
Another awesome feature worth mentionning is that THM always has rare songs from bands I already like, songs I can’t find anywhere else. The Go! Team’s Positive Tension and Soldier Girl covers are good exemples.
Do you accept music submissions? Montreal’s Malajube is another kickass band from Canada that should definitively be featured on THM. And get more Diableros! š
March 3, 2006 1:10 pm
umm…I’ll start with just one of many.
Jose Gonzalez. Though I had heard it before in the Sony Brevia commercial, I did not know who it was, and tried to find out. Then I heard it on the Hype Machine.
March 3, 2006 5:51 pm
Daniel Hutchens
March 3, 2006 6:37 pm
Oh No! Oh My! grabbed me with the very first track I heard. Absolutely hooked. Immediately went and bought the CD and man is it worth it.
March 3, 2006 10:20 pm
Gnarls Barkley, I’m sure we will be hearing a lot more from him soon, his music even seems to be appearing on the local radio stations!
March 5, 2006 9:27 am
Numerous people discovered Johnny Cash when the movie, Walk The Line, came out. They’re kinda posers. I, on the other hand, discovered Johnny Cash from someone who discovered him from the movie. I guess that makes me a second generation Cash-poser.
Thanks for the asylum and the tunes. I have to go listen to Hurt, Man In Black, and, oddly enough after that list, A Boy Named Sue again.
March 6, 2006 7:00 pm
Ewidge – Haha!
But what if you discovered Johnny Cash from someone who discovered him from the movie which they discovered by getting a flyer while waiting in line to get into TRL in NY?
March 7, 2006 12:49 am
i love music and Iām going to create my own band with my friends. I just need some ideas. By the Johnny Cash music is great. Look it over. I found your site very interesting and exciting. I really enjoyed it. My best wishes
