New Feature #1: Profile Pics + Info
Finally! You can put a face to your awesome taste in music. To add a profile photo, click the Settings link on the main site, and then click the Picture tab. In the Account tab, you can add your real name, what you’re doing right now, your location and your personal website.
Note: Yes, the default user image is John McCain, so why haven’t you changed it yet?
New Feature #2: Favorite Counts
We’ve added Fav Counts all over the site, so now you can see how many people have favorited a track, and you can even browse the list. We’ve been using this for a few weeks behind the scenes, and it’s been a blast to discover new users this way. You can also browse the Popular page by most favorited (the default is still most played).
New Feature #3: Live Song Updates
On all pages, if we know there are updates in the Machine, we now push a friendly little reminder: “There are new songs. Refresh to see them,” so you won’t miss a beat.
Oo, glad to not be a McCain
October 1, 2008 6:28 pm
Glad it’s not Obama’s face as the default!
October 1, 2008 7:13 pm
Where is the pop-up player?
This is new player is bugging me, am I the only one?
October 1, 2008 7:55 pm
Really nice upgrads. Congratulations!!! Do you plan on making a non-flah player that would work on the iPhone?
October 1, 2008 8:53 pm
I looove the new features! wtf?? John McCain??? Ugh! As you can see mine changed, stat. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
October 1, 2008 10:32 pm
“Don’t be a McCain! Login and upload your profile photo today!”
Great idea!
October 1, 2008 10:48 pm
What happened to the pop-up player?
The site is kinda gay without it…still love it though :]
but it bugs me that u guys excluded the pop-up player though :/
October 1, 2008 11:39 pm
I’m missing the pop up like everyone else but hellz ya no McCain =D now lets convince my father!
October 2, 2008 1:25 am
Amazing lol
October 2, 2008 4:08 am
sneaky one with the McCain default pic.
made a quick move to the settings tab. ha!
October 2, 2008 6:42 am
why did you remove the fans + how many listens the song has gotten? not everybody “loves” a song. people listen to way more than they “love” and that was a better way to judge how many times it had been heard.
if no one has “loved” a song it looks like no one has listened to it.
i really wish you’d put it back to how it was, easily seen without having to click on something else. i think this change sucks.
keep the silly avatar thing if you want but put it back to how it was.
October 2, 2008 7:27 am
one more thing. it doesn’t make sense anymore in the popular listings.
you have a song at #29, found yesterday, which has been loved 4 times. at #30 is a song, found yesterday, which as been loved 26 times. how is number 29 more popular than #30 if it hasn’t been loved more times? there’s no indication of how many times it’s actually been heard, which i thought was the way the popular list was generated.
this is a bad change, guys. it distorts what’s really going on.
October 2, 2008 7:33 am
Had to get rid of the McCain!
October 2, 2008 8:07 am
Well done! The hype machine just keeps getting better and better. Keep up the good work guys! You remain my favorite music discovery site.
PS the McCain thing was genius though I’m sure some people will take issue with it.
October 2, 2008 10:01 am
I’d rather be a rabid squirrel than a McCain. Thanks for the … encouragement. Gerat new features 😉
October 2, 2008 10:16 am
Well, that’s ONE way to get us motivated into changing our profiles!
October 2, 2008 12:44 pm
I KNEW that wasn’t what I looked like. This explains it. 😉
October 2, 2008 12:50 pm
As bad as McCain is at least it’s not Palin!
October 2, 2008 1:17 pm
mjrc –
We found the information about the # of plays wasn’t as useful as the # of hearts a song has received. That is why we made that more prominent.
There are also two ways to view the popular listings now. The default one shows you what’s happening by the # of plays, but you can also look at it by the tracks that are most loved. There is a link to switch in the black title bar of the page.
October 2, 2008 2:37 pm
I am no longer a McCain, I am a unicorn.
I like the update so far!
-Unicorn ’08!
October 2, 2008 2:47 pm
why would you get rid of the play counts?
It makes so much more sense to keep that as opposed to the favorite counts…no one particularly cares about faces when they’re tracking plays and popularity
October 2, 2008 4:42 pm
Please put back the # of people who listened to a song!!
October 2, 2008 5:36 pm
Now I actually can’t find where the people who favorited the song are…
October 3, 2008 12:30 am
I think I’ll put a more flattering picture of McCain up thank you!
Danke Shoen
October 3, 2008 12:59 am
why put mc Cain? I know it’s cool for the obama’s or anti-mc cain’s but it’s a strange way to make people upload their avatar… through in case of joke, to put w.Bush face is more relevant than mc cain’s cause he will be out anyway in couple of weeks!
October 3, 2008 7:41 am
Having McCain as the default picture is evil =(
October 3, 2008 9:29 am
the mccain profile picture is hilarious! it totally worked. i’ve never uploaded a photo faster.

October 3, 2008 10:18 am
the hype machine is getting so… social. nice.
October 3, 2008 12:36 pm
Hmm. I loved the revamp of Hype back in the day, but I’m leaving the dang McCain picture. Leave Hype Machine about the music, not about profile pictures and other Facebook-type crap.
October 3, 2008 2:47 pm
That’s funny really i didn’t get it at first i even starded to get mad because i had a picture of mccain in my dash bord.nice future “hype machine” Im so happy i’m not a mccain .go OBAMA :p
October 3, 2008 6:40 pm
I’m going to have to agree with a few others. As a blogger, knowing the amount of people who listened to a track is extremely helpful. Please bring it back!
October 3, 2008 6:53 pm
Guys, you made me fret when I moved to next page and found it different! And looking the McCain image, well, I almost get a heart attack. But I’ll have to let you know that such wasn’t the problem, but the fact that I was unable to upload a new avatar using Songbird 0.7.0 (tried twice), nor I’m unable to browse my “other searches” in my profile page without involving a page refresh and still not showing all my ‘loved’ searches (this happens with the blog and the following people sections). I think you should know about this. See ya!
October 3, 2008 10:47 pm
thank God not everyone is afraid to a take political stand.
I don’t wanna be a McCain
October 4, 2008 7:57 am
Maaaaaan you’ve removed the listens feature
that really helped, especially as I have a blog and was keen to see how often people listened to the tracks I posted.
i’m disappointed by that features removal but otherwise a good update
October 4, 2008 9:03 am
“We found the information about the # of plays wasn’t as useful as the # of hearts a song has received. That is why we made that more prominent.”
Well, you made it more than more prominent. You made it the only one available. A little disappointing. Thanks anyway for all the good job.
ciao, e.
October 4, 2008 9:57 am
Everyone is complaining, but I like what hypem has done.
The McCain avatar was hilarious, it freaked me out at first. ;]
October 4, 2008 10:50 am
You’ve got to bring the pop up player for individual songs back. Its too much of a hassle without it, im going back to last.fm
October 4, 2008 12:13 pm
Notyhing new to say; just wanted to add my tongue to the voices who note that # plays was a useful statistic for us bloggers. Isn’t HM for us, as well as readers — isn’t this a partnership, in other words? If adding it back in is no trouble, I’d urge reconsideration.
October 4, 2008 8:35 pm
From one of the bloggers whose tracks you list: I’d far rather see names of users who actually *listened* to a song than a widget that shows who favorited it. (though that whole drop-down design is pretty nifty.) It’s frustrating to not have some kind of stats for logged-in users.
October 5, 2008 1:40 am
We will have the listening stats for the bloggers available soon. All we are saying is that to a more casual user of the site, they aren’t as useful.
So, don’t worry, we know they matter and you will be able to see them soon. 🙂
October 5, 2008 1:45 am
thanks for listening, anthony. that’s why we love you guys so much!
October 5, 2008 12:07 pm
good update, but…sorry,I don´t like the number near the heart, can you put this in the data area? I think it´s better for the minimal look of the site…thanks!
October 5, 2008 9:57 pm
Anthony –
Many thanks!
October 6, 2008 11:35 am
Fack you and your crappy politics. We don’t care who you want to be President. We just want to listen to music and this update screws with that.
October 6, 2008 1:20 pm
Dig the McCain thing. It made me giggle like a little girl. Just don’t turn the hype machine into a wannabe myspace/facebook. It’ll destroy the underground (or whats left of it) as we know it.
SAVE INDIEROCK.
October 6, 2008 1:21 pm
You tricky bitches.
October 7, 2008 11:06 am
I am siked my McCain icon… 100 x better than that floppy-donkey-eared Obama
October 7, 2008 1:25 pm
your radio isn’t working
October 8, 2008 2:59 am
Thanks for the update re: play counts.
They are extremely useful for tracking.
Best,
sb

October 9, 2008 2:48 pm
Hey guys I love this site, I just made an account, its awesome
thanks,
http://indyconcerts.com/
October 9, 2008 3:05 pm
So, now I can only listen to a song for as long as it takes me to scroll through a page? 🙁 I still love you, but maybe a little less than before.
October 10, 2008 2:10 pm
digging the reminder to refresh for newly added songs! awesome job on the new features.
October 11, 2008 5:27 pm
these new features are cool BUT …. you have a huge and growing music blog list and I find it harder to find music that i like.
It would be nice if my hypem playlist would automaticaly skip the list of music blogs I don’t like.
With that feature, I would spend more time listening music instead of “fast forwarding” to the next blog.
Anyway, thanks and Go Hype Machine team Go !
Antonio 🙂
October 12, 2008 3:31 pm
Dearest Hype,
I adore your site! I was thinking a cool feature (pretty sure you don’t have this yet) would be if you could favourite songs into certain “folders”… ie: Song A has more of a “Oh my boyfriend just RIPPED my heart out” feel vs. song B which is totally a “rock out with your COCK out” type of song…
would be cool to have a little more control over your favourites… or did I miss that?
Keep it up, though! LOVE IT!
Miranda
October 13, 2008 1:48 pm
Why did you take the pop-up player link off of the individual songs?
Now if you want to hear a song at the end of the page, you have to scroll through everything on the pop-up player.
Doesn’t make sense.
October 15, 2008 11:30 am
Yo, Big Fan of Hype
Add more things to lead users to good music, such as the list you had called zeitgeist. that was cool
Anyway, keep up the great work.
December 21, 2009 3:14 pm
That music is utterly incredible, and I’m not even into that type of music.
